Max Lowe is an explorer, photographer and filmmaker. As a National Geographic Adventurer with an eye for capturing subtle, yet profound beauty, he has traveled the world documenting outdoor culture and the environment. Max is one of those people that makes you want to be a better human with a smile that can light up a room and a warmth that emanates from his core. When you surround yourself with good people, great things tend to happen, so we asked Max if he would become an ambassador for the Love (and Adventure!) 4 Lucas project and carry the Lucas Flag along on his next expedition. The Love (and Adventure) 4 Lucas project was created to spread awareness for DIPG, a rare form of terminal cancer that our little buddy Lucas Harashima is battling like a champ.
Max carried the Lucas Flag all the way to the rim of the Orongo Crater on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. For those of you not familiar with this exotic destination, the Orongo Crater is an extinct volcano that lead to the formation of the island of Rapa Nui. While on Rapa Nui, Max was working on a film about cultural conversation, specifically a story about a man named Heu Hauoa. He is said to be one of the last few pure descendants of the natives of Rapa Nui, and according to local lore, Heu Hauoa’s lineage can be credited with carving the immense stone heads for which the island has become famous. As the film’s director, this was an extra special trip for Max as he set out to capture the customs, traditions and enigmatic essence of Rapa Nui, while carrying the Lucas Flag as a symbol of adventure in the face of adversity.
“I have friends my age who have battled cancer and won,” Max told us. “They are definitely some of the most intrepid and learned folks I know, I think in part because when you face that kind of struggle, you gain perspective on life that no one else has the insight to understand.”
The Lucas Flag will continue its series of expeditions with its next stop in Greenland alongside world-renowned photographer and filmmaker, Chris Burkard.
