Through The Lens: RANGE Magazine X Brian Merriam

RANGE Magazine is launching August 6, 2014 and the cover will feature PHOTOGRAPHY from Brian Merriam. Brian’s photography tends to focus on landscapes, but there is a SURREAL and MYSTERIOUS undercurrent that sets it apart from traditional outdoor photography. He often uses the theme of “nowhere” to create unique shots.

Much of Brian’s artistic inspiration comes from his talented friends, who are all kinds of creative spirits — painters, writers, musicians and fellow photographers. However, Brian’s first love was music, so he tries to capture emotion in photos as he would if he was playing a song. He also claims that getting out of the Big Apple was especially inspirational for his continued journey as a photographer.

RANGE’s previous publication, Scramble, featured a photo essay from Brian about road tripping in Utah, where he captured the NATURAL BEAUTY of places like Arches and Capitol Reef National Parks. Brian says he loved contributing to the FRESH, new vibe that was produced with Scramble, and is excited to recreate that feeling with the new RANGE Magazine.

The epic photo that will be on the cover of RANGE Magazine was shot by Brian in the Imperial Dunes of Southeast California. He worked through 40-50 mph gusts of wind that helped to create some pretty thrilling photos. The cover photo has a feeling of EXISTING ELSEWHERE, or as Brian says, “like it could be some far flung desert in another part of the world.”

In addition to his killer magazine cover, Brian will be embarking on a RANGE-sponsored road trip, starting in Salt Lake City for the RANGE Magazine launch and Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. He’ll be enjoying the simplicity of being on the road and taking photos of scenic byways throughout Southern Oregon, Northern California, Idaho and Nevada. We are incredibly stoked to have Brian and his extraordinary talent on board for our new magazine launch. Be sure to keep an eye out for his RANGE Instagram takeover while he’s on the road!
