Ai Weiwei Pours Paint All Over Designer Fashion for V Magazine

Many things may evolve throughout our lives, but if there’s one thing that you can count on being constant, it’s Ai Weiwei’s ability to cause controversy. After fashion magazine V requested that the Chinese artist shoot the garments of 14 emerging artists from Dover Street Market’s concept store by Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, he took complete creative freedom with the project. Dressing his friends in the 14 provided garments and having them stand on a pedestal, Weiwei doused them in different colors of paint as he clicked his camera.

Designers who provided their pieces for the project included 1205, Craig Green, Comme des Garçons brands Ganryu and Noir Kei Ninomiya, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Hood by Air, Jacquemus, KTZ, Lee Roach, Melitta Baumeister, Pheobe English, Proper Gang, Sibling and Shaun Samson, who reflected to the Washington Post, “I don’t know if it’s sad or positive that he decided to do the project this way, but the outcome is beautiful.” Regardless if Weiwei’s approach was a slap in the face to the designers’ expensive fashions or not, the photos are certainly stunning, which you can view below.
