Solar-Powered Bike Path Unveiled in the Netherlands

As more and more people are harnessing the sun’s rays for the requirements of daily life, solar power is being used in increasingly innovative ways. Dutch social design lab Studio Roosegaarde recently unveiled their newest project in Nuenen, Netherlands: a glowing, solar-charged bike path. Named the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicycle Path, the kilometer-long trail’s design was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting, “The Starry Night,” and was designed using a special paint in swirling patterns that soaks up the sun during the day to glow after dark, providing illumination to nocturnal cyclists.

As an added precaution, the path is also lit along its sides using LEDs around certain curves, which will also provide additional visibility when cloudy days do not allow for enough solar energy to be captured by the paint. Take a closer look at this beautiful addition to Nuenen in our gallery below. We’re feeling like maybe a RANGE trip to the Netherlands is in order soon.
