On Our Radar: Kommon Universe

We love a brand with a clear vision, and Kommon Universe is a menswear company with just that. Based in Manchester, UK, this young company is creating refreshing clothing for the young, casual guy. Their design ethos is based off of a white space they saw in the market — a need for menswear fashion fused with tech and color, as well as elements of sportswear and the outdoors.

For their Spring/Summer 2015 collection, Elements and Compounds, inspiration was drawn from natural textures, which is translated into twills, French terry and perforated nylon. Texture also speaks through prints, which Kommon Universe executes flawlessly. In this collection, you’ll see waves, botanicals and even sketchbook-like prints depicting insects, potted plants and animal skulls. A unique palette of navy, blue, white and lilac provides an ideal base layer for the eye-catching prints – the lilac looks amazing on men, might we add. In terms of items, expect to see twists on classic menswear pieces. Shirts get updated with a baseball jersey neckline and knit panels, while shorts slim up and are paired back to matching sweatshirts. It’s these little details that show how much thought is put into each piece, and they work together to elevate menswear overall. Meanwhile, tech influences speak through bonded mesh fabrications, and the outdoors are evident in the commuter-friendly pieces.

Alongside a strong design vision, Kommon Universe aims to work with artists, illustrators and creatives of all types. You’ll see this in their brand book as well as on the editorial section of their website. Their goal in this arena is to inspire other creatives in Northern England to turn their ideas into reality. While London typically steals the fashion spotlight, we love how Kommon Universe is inspiring other UK cities to partake in the action.
